Preparation
How to prepare fo a test
Two minutes of reading saves a repeat visit. If you are unsure about fasting or paperwork, call the desk before you set out.
Imaging
Ultrasound, X-ray, CT and mammography
What to eat, what to drink and what to carry — for each of the imaging tests we run.
Ultrasound — whole abdomen
Fasting · 6–8 hrs
Water · Sips only
Morning slot best
- Come on an empty stomach — nothing after dinner if the scan is in the morning.
- No fizzy drinks the night before; gas obscures the pancreas and aorta.
- Take your regular medicines with a sip of water unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Bring your prescription. Diabetic patients should tell the desk before waiting.
Ultrasound — pelvis / KUB
Fasting · Not needed
Water · Full bladder
Allow 45 min
- Drink 750 ml – 1 litre of water an hour before and do not pass urine.
- A full bladder is what makes the uterus, ovaries or prostate visible.
- Wear something loose you can lift clear of the lower abdomen.
- Tell us if you are menstruating — we will still scan, but say so at the desk.
Ultrasound — pregnancy
Fasting · Not needed
Water · Normal
Form F required
- Bring the prescription from your treating doctor and photo ID for both parents where asked.
- Form F is filled in and signed at the centre before the scan, as the PC-PNDT Act requires.
- We do not disclose the sex of the foetus. This is the law, not our policy.
- Bring earlier scan reports so growth can be compared.
Digital X-Ray
Fasting · Not needed
Water · Normal
Walk-in
- No preparation. Come in with your prescription and we will do it straight away.
- Remove metal — chains, bangles, hooks, coins in pockets — before the exposure.
- Tell the radiographer if you are, or might be, pregnant before any X-ray.
- Cotton clothing without prints or zips saves changing into a gown.
CT — plain
Fasting · 4 hrs
Water · Sips only
Prescription needed
- Light food up to four hours before; water is fine until an hour before.
- Bring earlier CT or MRI films if you have them — comparison changes the report.
- Remove jewellery and metal at the console room.
- Tell us about pregnancy, asthma or kidney disease before the scan.
CT — with contrast
Fasting · 4–6 hrs
Water · As advised
Blood test may be needed
- A recent creatinine / kidney function report may be asked for before contrast.
- Stop metformin if your doctor has advised it — ask before you stop anything.
- Tell us about any earlier reaction to contrast dye, asthma or thyroid disease.
- Someone should come with you if you are diabetic, elderly or unwell.
Mammography
Fasting · Not needed
Water · Normal
Women-only suite
- Book the week after your period if you can — the breast is less tender then.
- No talcum powder, deodorant or cream on the chest or underarms that day.
- A two-piece outfit is easier; you will undress from the waist up.
- Bring earlier mammograms — density is compared year to year.
ECG and EEG
Fasting · Not needed
Water · Normal
Allow 45 min for EEG
- ECG needs no preparation and takes about ten minutes.
- For EEG, wash your hair the night before and use no oil, gel or serum.
- Sleep-deprived EEG: follow the sleep instructions your doctor has written.
- Eat normally before an EEG unless your doctor has said otherwise.
Laboratory tests
Fasting · 8–12 hrs
Water · Water allowed
Morning slot best
- Fasting sugar and lipid profile need 8–12 hours with only water.
- Post-prandial sugar is taken exactly two hours after your meal.
- Come before 11 AM where you can — samples run in the same batch.
- Bring the prescription so the right panel is booked at the desk.
Biopsy and FNAC
Fasting · As advised
Water · As advised
Prescription required
- Bring a recent platelet count and coagulation profile if your doctor has ordered them.
- Tell us about blood thinners — aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin — several days ahead.
- Someone should accompany you and stay for the observation period afterwards.
- Histopathology takes a few working days; the desk will tell you when to collect.
